Reading at Reaside
When they arrive in year 3, all children take a phonics check so that we can quickly provide support to those who need it. Children are then grouped as part of their English lessons based on the sounds they know and they work through the Read Write Inc phonics programme until they are secure in all of their sounds. Children using RWI are re-tested every 4 weeks to ensure they are making good progress and the aim is to have all children off the programme as quickly as possible.
Some children may still need this support in years 4 and beyond, or move to the Fresh Start programme to help them to retain the sounds needed to read fluently.
Reading books at Reaside are organised into Book Bands. We use Accelerated Reader to ensure that the children are reading books at an appropriate and challenging level.
For those children who enter Year 3 requiring support with Phonics, we use Read Write Inc materials and the 'Fresh Start' catch up progamme.
